The movie "Comandante" (Commander), which premiered at the 80th Venice Film Festival, is based on a true story.

Se visiti gli Studi di Cinecittà a Roma, potrai entrare nel sottomarino S-33, set del film U-571. Ma per il film Comandante, i disegnatori e gli artigiani di Cinecittà hanno ricostruito da capo il sommergibile Cappellini degli anni '40 della Regia Marina Italiana.
Il film Comandante è tratto da una storia vera.
All’inizio della Seconda guerra mondiale Salvatore Todaro comanda alla sua maniera il sommergibile italiano Cappellini: prua rinforzata in acciaio per improbabili speronamenti, colpi di cannone sparati in emersione per affrontare faccia a faccia il nemico e un equipaggio armato di pugnale per impossibili corpo a corpo. Nell’ottobre del 1940, mentre naviga in Atlantico, nel buio della notte si profila la sagoma di un mercantile che viaggia a luci spente, il Kabalo, che in seguito si scoprirà di nazionalità belga e che apre improvvisamente il fuoco contro il sommergibile e l'equipaggio italiano. Scoppia una breve ma violenta battaglia nella quale Todaro affonda il mercantile a colpi di cannone. Ed è a questo punto che il Comandante prende una decisione destinata a rimanere nella storia della Marina Italiana: salvare i 26 naufraghi belgi, condannati ad affogare in mezzo all’oceano, per sbarcarli nel porto sicuro più vicino, come previsto dalla legge del mare. Per accoglierli a bordo è costretto a navigare in emersione per tre giorni, rendendosi visibile alle forze nemiche e mettendo a repentaglio la sua vita e quella dei suoi uomini.
Quando il capitano del Kabalo, sbarcando nella baia di Santa Maria delle Azzorre, chiede a Salvatore Todaro perché si sia esposto a un tale rischio contravvenendo alle direttive del suo stesso comando, il Comandante Todaro risponde con le parole che lo hanno reso una leggenda: “Perché noi siamo italiani”.

If you visit the Cinecittà Studios in Rome, you can enter the S-33 submarine, which was the set for the movie U-571. But for the movie Comandante, Cinecittà designers and craftsmen reconstructed from scratch the 1940s Cappellini submarine of the Italian Royal Navy.
The movie Comandante is based on a true story.
At the beginning of World War II, Salvatore Todaro commanded the Italian submarine Cappellini in his own way: a steel-reinforced bow for unlikely ramming, cannon shots fired while surfacing to engage the enemy face-to-face, and a crew armed with daggers for impossible hand-to-hand combat. In October 1940, while navigating in the Atlantic, the silhouette of a merchant ship traveling with its lights off, the Kabalo, (later discovered to be of Belgian nationality) loomed in the dark of night and suddenly opened fire on the submarine and its Italian crew. A brief but violent battle broke out, in which Todaro sinked the ship with cannonfire. It is at this point that the Commander made a decision that remained in the history of the Italian Navy: to rescue the 26 Belgian castaways, condemned to drown in the middle of the ocean, by disembarking them at the nearest safe port, as required by the law of the sea. By taking them aboard, he was forced to navigate in emersion for three days, making himself visible to enemy forces and risking his life and that of his men.
When the captain of the Kabalo, upon disembarking in the bay of Santa Maria in the Azores, asked Salvatore Todaro why he exposed himself to such a risk in defiance of his own command's directives, Commander Todaro replied with the words that have made him a legend: "Because we are Italians."
