Mother's Day is a widespread celebration all over the world. In Italy it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, the day when sons and daughters usually eat with their mother and bring her flowers.

La Festa della Mamma

La figura della Madre, la Donna, la Madonna, è molto forte nella cultura italiana. Si collega in parte al mito della Grande Madre, una divinità femminile primordiale di cui si trovano molte tracce nelle civiltà preistoriche del Mediterraneo e in tutta Europa. Alcune civiltà preistoriche mediterranee erano matriarcali. Durante l'Umanesimo e il Rinascimento, la donna rinforza il suo ruolo di persona che eleva l'uomo a sfere più alte e lo migliora (pensiamo alla donna angelicata del Dolce Stil Novo). La donna si conferma come tramite fra l'uomo e Dio, fra la parte materiale dell'uomo e quella spirituale (pensiamo alla Divina Commedia, in cui è Beatrice che accompagna Dante in Paradiso). Dalla Divina Commedia, di Dante Alighieri, Paradiso, canto XXXIII, in preghiera alla Madonna: "Donna, se' tanto grande e tanto vali, che qual vuol grazia e a te non ricorre sua disianza vuol volar senz'ali."	The figure of the Mother, the Woman, the Madonna, is very strong in Italian culture. It is linked in part to the myth of the Mother Goddess, a primordial goddess whose traces are found in many prehistoric civilizations throughout the Mediterranean and Europe. Some prehistoric Mediterranean civilizations were matriarchal. During Humanism and the Renaissance, the woman strengthens her role as a person who elevates man to higher spheres and improves him (think of the angelic woman of the Dolce Stil Novo). The woman is confirmed as the intermediary between man and God, between the material part of man and the spiritual one (think of the Divine Comedy, in which it is Beatrice who accompanies Dante through Paradise). From the Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri, Paradise, canto XXXIII, in prayer to the Madonna: "Lady, thou art so great, and so worthy, That he who wishes grace and does not run to thee, Will have his wishes fly without wings."
